Three different directors present tales of love and desire. The first segment features Miss Hua (Gong Li), who is a prostitute and wants to have a younger man in her life. He is a tailor, so he creates amazing clothes for her and is obsessed. The next segment shows a lovely woman cleaning up and getting dressed, and then the voyeur (Robert Downey Jr.) who is watching her do this is actually dreaming it. He is a designer of clocks and is obsessed with this dream. He tells his psychiatrist, Dr. Pearl (Alan Arkin) about it. In the last segment, a married couple have a falling-out. Then they go out to eat and one engages in adultery.
