Erika (Isabelle Huppert) is a beautiful and talented professor of music at a Viennese conservatory. Despite this she lives at home with her mother (Annie Girardot) who still controls her life. While she teaches for a living, she actually finds that she cannot stand her students, and takes a secret delight in finding reasons and ways to punish them cruelly. When she meets Walter (Benoit Magimel) things change for her, though her treatment of other students remains the same she becomes obsessed with Walter. Eventually the two end up in a relationship, but her repressed violent sexuality may be a little too much for Walter to handle.
